A great way to grow your business is to replace competitive legacy printers, but despite the customer benefits a new Zebra printer can bring, replacing an existing installation can be a significant project for the end user. One way to deliver a higher return on this investment is to reduce the time and complexity involved, and allow the existing software applications driving the printers to run without modification.
Answering this need, an exciting new feature of Link-OS 2.0 is Virtual Devices, ensuring that new Zebra Link-OS printers can continue to work with existing label formats and data streams from competitive legacy products. Ultimately, this makes Zebra printers even easier to integrate, manage and maintain.
Virtual Devices are on-printer apps that allow Link-OS printers to use the legacy languages normally associated with other printer brands. Multiple Virtual Devices can be downloaded to a single printer, allowing users to choose between command languages as needed. Optimised to ensure fast throughput, Virtual Devices also highly manageable, using the Link-OS Profile Manager. This means you don’t have to give up on the many other benefits of Link-OS when running legacy languages.
Zebra has recently expanded its Virtual Device applications, adding ESC/POS to the O’Neil support already available. In addition, support for Datamax and Intermec is available as a Beta test, and many more emulations are planned for 2014.
Originally introduced by EPSON®, ESC/POS is a proprietary POS printer command system. The following Zebra printers now support ESC/POS:
- iMZ220™ and iMZ320™ mobile printers
- QLn220™, QLn320™, and QLn420™ mobile printers
